I am asked this question every time I am seen in public with my “snazzy” camera. So…having said snazzy camera is the #1 qualifier for being a photographer I guess. And that is the way it seems people look at it anymore!
I bought this $500-$7000 camera, so I am a photographer…RIGHT!? WRONG!!! I have looked at so many so called “photography” websites…and so many of them look like the people did just that…I bought this camera so therefore I AM A PHOTOGRAPHER.
I admit…I was guilty of that too. I decided way to early on that I WAS a photographer. I wanted to be like all the cool kids! I wanted a website, a blog and biz cards and a cool flickr account that EVERYONE looked at and commented on and all my pics go to EXPLORE!! I got caught up in all of it!
Now…do I consider myself a photographer?
No…I don’t. I love taking pics…that much is obvious! Nature…flowers, bugs, birds, landscapes…I LOVE IT! I could take pics of them all day if their is something beautiful, interesting or creepy in front of me! I absolutely LOVE taking concert pics! I love taking pics of my kids when they have activities and performances or just out playin’ at the park! I enjoy the occasional family shoot with anyone who decides to call me up and plan one! I love it all! But even this doesn’t make me a photographer.
I guess you could call me a professional hobbyist!
I am mostly self taught…partially formally educated, but unfinished(NYIP)…partially internet learned. lol Practice and trial and error. That’s what got me to where I am now. 3.5 half years of reading and playing and learning what I can! I would love to get a degree in photography someday too…and then maybe, just maybe I could call myself a photographer!
Sure I charge people…but $30 for a disc of pics and 3-4 hours of my time is quite a bargain in my book.
So when someone asks me…”Are you a photographer?” and I get an indecisive look in my eyes and give you the so-so hand gesture…that just means. Yes I love taking pics everywhere I go…but no…I am not a “photographer”.
So there you have it…a good rant to start your morning.
I love when the flower beds across the street start to bloom! There are poppies everywhere!
Food! LOL!
We went out to east last night and I didn’t get a great pic of my food. Then we had Lasagna, salad, veggies and garlic french bread for dinner tonight…but I was in too much of a hurry to remember to get a pic.
Then I realized Sage’s Birthday cake was the coolest looking food we had all week! So here it is!
