White Lined Sphinx Caterpillar

So…you’ve heard the story before…we were driving to the school and I spotted a caterpillar! Only this time it was GREEN! :)   So I had to save it! LOL! Hey! They are in the middle of the road they are gonna get squashed! heh.  So we brought it home. We had to wait awhile in the van for my oldest son to get done with his after school activities. The caterpillar was on a stick and I hear my daughter say “Mom what fell out of it’s butt?!” ROFL!  Yep it pooped…lol!

So I came home and searched around to find out what kind of caterpillar it is and was excited to find out it is a hummingbird moth!  So if it does make a cocoon and emerge we will get to see…

Just an update…

So nothing is going on with the chrysalis…It isn’t showing any signs of emergence…but like I said before it could be 2-24 weeks.  It will be 2 weeks on Saturday! Here’s hopin’ in a week or so I can update with pics of a butterfly!

It is definitely dried out and looks even more like a piece of wood than a week and a half ago. I need to see if I can find out if there are any signs to look for when they are ready to emerge.

We found another one! :)

On the way to school this morning we found another caterpillar crossing the road.  So I pulled over and waited anxiously as two cars drove over it.  So I had to save it. :)   It stayed in this funny/defensive position all the way home, I thought it look cool like that!

It is the same kind as before so we will have two tiger swallowtail butterflies! The kids were really excited and had to show it off to a couple of the teachers at school!

I tried to get it to go on the defensive and stick out it’s Osmeterium. I guess I didn’t seem like much of a threat! lol

So it has joined our chrysalis and hopefully soon we will have two! It will be so cool once they finally emerge!

All I can say is…”I WANT IT NOW!” :)
Earlier this year I seriously considered the 5D and 40D…I am so glad I waited! This is a far off dream at this point but man it is a beautiful camera! :)

This is the announcement from DPReview.com.
And an in depth review can be found HERE!

This whole process is really neat!

I checked on the caterpillar this morning and it was still looking like before. We knew it hadn’t died though because it was still wiggling.

A few minutes ago I decided to go check on it again and saw a small insect looking piece on the floor of the terrarium. Sure enough when I looked up at the caterpillar it had started it’s chrysalis! So the whole family came to see and they are all anxiously waiting…waiting for it to emerge. Hopefully sooner than later! :) It could be 2 weeks…or it could be until next spring…!!!

I know kinda gross…but it’s all part of the process. If I hadn’t already seen a picture of one with a head next to it I would have been wondering what the heck! LOL!
It just lost it's head!

I think it is cool how you can still see the blue dots along the side of it. I’m not sure if they will eventually fade away or not. The small thread that holds it in place fascinates me too…for something so tiny and fragile it is so strong.

Butterflies, butterflies…

I love butterflies! They are so colorful and I love the way they flutter around!

Over the last couple years I have been following these beautiful flyers around and not having a whole lot of success. In the last few months I have been a lot more fortunate! I take my daughter to the park a lot and there are butterflies all over! I have been trying for a couple weeks now to get a picture of a certain butterfly…but they would never land.

Today! I finally managed to get close to a couple that were resting…I was so excited!  I also found two other types today too!

So here is a rundown of the different butterflies I have found over the last couple years!

Tiger Swallowtails
First their 5th instar stage…as a brown caterpillar nearing the pupa stage.

The following two are the pupa stage.
(Hopefully soon I will have pictures of the chrysalis stage too!)

Tiger Swallowtails are easily one of my favorite local butterflies!  There are many others I like more but they are not local to Arizona.

Next favorite of the butterflies I have “captured”…
The Pipevine Swallowtail
This is such a beautiful butterfly! I didn’t manage to get a good picture of it but the lower wings have a turquoise color to them.  When the light hit them just right I could see it!  I loved it!

Painted Lady
I was first informed of this butterfly type when my oldest son was in Kindergarten. His class had the opportunity to watch the caterpillars of this butterfly change into butterflies and it was so exciting for them!

Tropical Buckeye
My daughter found this poor little guy in the parking lot of Walmart.  It was mangled…and I wondered if I had stepped on it because it was right behind my foot…

Red-Spotted Purple
Another one of my faves!  I have been chasing these butterflies around for a couple weeks and finally got so good ones today!

Mourning Cloak
When you see the underside of this butterfly’s wing it is not that pretty…almost looks more like a moth.  The tops of it’s wings are another story!

California Sister aka. Arizona Sister
I found two new butterflies today!  :) This being the first!  My daughter and I set out on our almost daily walk around the park and the first thing I see are two of these beautiful butterflies fluttering in the trees!  It’s at times like this I really MISS! my 70-200 lens! :/  But the 100mm does pretty good with things a little way off.  Luckily they were pretty low on the tree!

Empress Leilia
It took me a bit of searching to figure out what this one was and I am pretty certain I figured it out! It flew away pretty fast so I didn’t get a great pic but that’s ok…maybe I will see one again someday.

Bordered Patch
This one I think looks kind of like a Bordered Patch but I am not completely sure.

Miscellaneous…
These are all the ones I have found that either I can’t figure out or haven’t taken the time.  I think they are all in the Cabbage White, Sulphur, Blue, Yellow and Copper families…but there are so many kinds I haven’t tried to find out.

What have we here?

So yesterday I found this caterpillar. Today it has either died or it is in the process of pupating! Let’s hope for the latter! I will keep the world posted on the process of this guy if it is indeed pupating! :)

I know it was in it’s 5th instar by the coloring of it, and all the research I have done on it, so I know it was definitely ready to pupate. So let’s hope so! The kids will love it!

I have read that they can stay in their chrysalis 2-24 weeks!  I hope it’s on the shorter end!

Caterpillar I see!

A Tiger Swallowtail Caterpillar!  I have never seen one of these! And they are soooooooo cool!

I was on my way to pick up my daughter from school and I see this big orange/red thing crossing the road.  I had to turn around and take pics of it.  I had just commented on a flickr friend’s caterpillar the day before saying I have never seen cool caterpillars…so I wasn’t passing this one up!

As soon as I picked it up I knew what it was and called Chaz to have him look it up and confirm.

So I brought it home and we put it in a tank with some birch twigs and we should see a pupa any day now!  The kids are so excited!

I love the colors, markings, little beady eyes and cute little feet!  It is so funny to watch them inch along the ground!
